May Day — a day of virtual workers’ struggle

International Workers Day, 1 May, was this year celebrated virtually, with members from many unions connecting to an event hosted by the Unions NSW May Day Committee. Among the many who joined the May Day webinar was a large contingent of NSWTF members. The event was hosted by well-known actor and MEAA member Simon Burke. It included some great speeches including one from ACTU President Sally McManus, who noted the significant spike in trust and respect unions have garnered in surveys conducted since COVID-19 hit our shores. There was a historical account of May Day read out by prominent Australian Thomas Keneally and some outstanding video clips from rank and file union members, including our own Hope Atkinson, on what May Day means to them.

The vocals of special guest, Billy Bragg, rounded off the evening all the way from London, UK, with a rendition of Solidarity Forever.

Thanks to all who participated and supported the event.

Those who were unable to be part of the event can view it here.

During the May Day event, Unions NSW also launched a short survey for members and non-members to complete — What do we want the world to look like past Covid19? The survey only takes a minute to complete, can be done on a smartphone. It can be accessed at: mayday2020.getfeedback.com/UnionsNSW
