Teachers Federation members at Walgett Community College High School walked off the job this
morning due to significant staffing issues.
Currently at the school there are 11 out of 21 positions that remain unfilled.
NSW Teachers Federation Deputy President Henry Rajendra said Walgett Community College High
School began the school year seriously under-staffed.
“This is another example of the NSW Government and its education department failing to fully staff
schools, in this case, a school which is one of the most complex and disadvantaged in the state, Mr
Rajendra said.
“The Education Department have known of the dire teacher shortages at Walgett for some time but
failed to address the problem. This is unfair ”
The union continues to receive reports of teacher shortages from other schools across the state.
“The staffing of all public schools is the responsibility of the NSW Government through its Education
Department. For many of our schools, the government and department have failed them.”
“The NSW Auditor General warned the Government two years ago that there was a critical shortage
and yet little is being done to address the shortfall.”
Mr Rajendra said the Education Department’s staffing unit had been gutted, leaving principals to fill
vacancies.
