Russell Honnery

I am a proud Anaiwan Man of the Gamilaroi Nation. I am a full time Primary Teacher at Ross Hill in Inverell. I was the Moree East Public School Federation Representative for 4 years and also Fed Rep at my current school of Ross Hill for 2 years. During this time I have been the local Association President at both Moree and Inverell.

I have been involved in school based issues relating to GONSKI, school zoning, Naplan, Schools Funding Review, BER Program, Teacher Improvement Programs, “Local Schools Local Decisions” and the “Your Rights at Work” Campaign. During this time I have organised local events, run meetings and given Councillors’ reports.

While performing the role as Aboriginal Members Councillor, I have had the opportunity to undertake a range of training which has helped increase my knowledge and skills as a teacher, Fed Rep and Unionist. These courses have included Association President and Secretary, Advanced Fed Rep, New Educators Network in 2008 (NEN 6) as well as Relief and Project Officer training. My role as Councillor has also given me the chance to meet and present a range of topics at Beginning Teacher Conferences, Courses, Seminars and the Aboriginal Members Conference over the last 6 years. During my time as a Councillor I have had the opportunity to be an Observer on Executive.

I am also on the ANTI-Racism and Future Teacher Scholarships Restricted Committees.
For 6 months in 2011, my role as Project Officer gave me experience in the membership system. I have also been a Relief Officer in 2013-Relieving for the Aboriginal Education Co-ordinator as well as Relief Industrial/Welfare Officer-2015.

I am looking forward to being able to continue in my role as Aboriginal Members Councillor in 2015-2016.
