2026 marks 40 years of Refugee Week in Australia, and the opportunity for schools and TAFE to share stories, challenge stereotypes and build a more compassionate public education community. This year is also the year that Australia marks the settlement of its one-millionth refugee since 1947.
This year ’s theme for Refugee Week is Finding Freedom: Family – A million stories.
‘A Million Stories’ recognises that every humanitarian visa granted by Australia has supported someone who was forcibly displaced as a result of war, conflict, persecution and threats to safety and human rights. Each visa granted tells a story, and each of these stories have contributed to our vibrant, diverse nation.
Federation is a proud sponsor of Refugee Week and encourages all workplaces to promote a greater awareness of refugees, the issues they face, and the contributions they are making to the Australian community, by planning events and celebrating inclusion in our schools and TAFE colleges during this special week, June 14 to June 20.
In celebrating Refugee Week, Federation partners with the Refugee Council of Australia. They call on us to reflect and consider the following:
- By extending our hands to people fleeing persecution and conflict, successive governments have given thousands the chance to rebuild their lives in safety
- Today, Australia is a vibrant and successful multicultural nation, thanks in large part to our resettlement of refugees. Refugees have made enormous contributions to our social, economic and cultural life, and continue to contribute to Australia’s growth
- Refugee and migrant issues are highly politicised in Australia. This often leads to misinformation in the lead up to elections, as some politicians and media outlets amplify fear and discord.
Celebrate Refugee Week to empower students with the knowledge, empathy, and global awareness needed to build truly inclusive classrooms – where diversity is recognised as a strength and every story matters.
