The NSW Teachers Federation welcomes the Minister for skills, John Barilaro’s announcement of 9 Skillspoints across the state.
These centres will provide an opportunity to re-establish and expand TAFE’s ability to create high quality curriculum to support training packages and specialised TAFE courses required by Industry.
Teachers Federation Deputy Secretary Maxine Sharkey said it was important that experienced TAFE teachers took a leading role in the new centres.
“Employing and utilising the knowledge and expertise of TAFE teachers in these Skillspoints will ensure the development of innovative curriculum which support the needs of students, industry and the economy,” Ms Sharkey said.
“TAFE teachers liaising with industry will be best placed to develop programs and course content which will engage and extend student’s skills training while meeting local and broader industry needs,” she said.
Ms Sharkey said TAFE had a proud history of working with business and communities to facilitate innovative approaches to providing quality Vocational Education in emerging skills areas and these Skillpoints offer the opportunity to build on this history.
“It is vital TAFE ensures ongoing, permanent employment for the teachers who will work within these centres,” Ms Sharkey said.
“TAFE can lead the way in supporting regional business development as well as the creation of desirable, secure employment opportunities in rural and regional NSW.”
