New figures obtained by the Australian Education Union under Freedom of Information confirm the Turnbull Government’s schools funding model, the so-called Gonski 2.0, will leave public schools significantly under-funded in 2018 and beyond.
The government figures show that by 2027, the overwhelming majority of public schools will not yet have reached the minimum Schooling Resource Standard, with students with disabilities hit hardest by the public school funding cuts.
“What the government’s own figures confirm is that this new funding model is neither needs based nor sector blind,” said NSW Teachers Federation President Maurie Mulheron earlier today.
“By guaranteeing an arbitrary 80 per cent of the SRS for non-government schools, the Turnbull Government are taking money away from those areas of greatest need in education.”
“The original Gonski review identified a minimum level of funding, targeted at areas of greatest need in order to overcome disadvantage and raise the educational attainment of all Australian students.
“This funding model abandons those principles in favour of guaranteeing funding for the already advantaged in our society.
“This funding model entrenches inequity. As more data becomes available, there is absolutely no doubt that the Turnbull Government’s education funding changes favour private, independent and Catholic schools and fail to adequately fund public schools.”
