Funding cuts to the ABC
At the May meeting, the RTA condemned the Turnbull Government’s budget. The ABC now faces an $84 million cut to its funding over the next three years and it seems that analysis of federal policies and expenditure on the broadcaster’s side is met with a large financial stick. The RTA suggests that Coalition members refer to the ABC’s Charter before formulating punitive funding cuts.
Developments in cancer research
Jennifer Philps addressed our members on the history and work of the Children’s Medical Research Institute. The CMRI was established in 1958 by Sir Lorimer Dods and Dr John Fulton. Initial funding was generated by Australia’s first telethon and a large public campaign. The institute has become a world-renowned research facility. Since 2016, its ProCan project is working towards significantly increasing the speed and precision of cancer diagnosis and providing treatment programs. The project is creating a vast, publicly available database of the proteome of all human cancers for researchers worldwide to access for further discoveries. ProCan’s 2022 target is to have a cancer patient’s treatment commenced within 36 hours of diagnosis.
Centenary celebration for the Hornsby Teachers Association
The Hornsby Teachers Association will be celebrating the centenary of Federation with a dinner on Tuesday, 21 August, 2018, at the Hornsby RSL Club (4 High Street, Hornsby) commencing at 6.30pm. Our monthly meetings regularly deal with pertinent matters relating to the aged, health care and education. There are frequent visits to galleries, cultural exhibitions and places of interest as well as organised lunches. Upcoming events
Our next two meetings in 2018 will be at Federation House on Friday, 13 July, and Friday, 10 August. Both meetings commence with lunch at 12.15pm, followed by a guest speaker at 1pm and conclude with a general meeting starting at 2pm.
There will be a guided tour of the Museum of Sydney on Friday, 27 July. The regular Club York luncheons are scheduled for 18 July and 15 August commencing at 12pm.
