Help get the kids off Nauru

Federation members are encouraged to participate in community campaign activities in the next week to advance an end to the indefinite mandatory detention of asylum seekers (and in particular children).

  • Join Federation members this Saturday for a rally at Hyde Park North at 2pm calling for all #KidsOffNauru. We will meet at 1.30pm at the fountain, where the Federation flags will be flying.
  • Unions NSW and Unions for Refugees’ launch of Behrouz Boochani’s new book, ‘Writing from detention on Manus’ on Tuesday 30 October at 5.30pm, in Unions NSW’s auditorium. Speakers will include ACTU President Michele O’Neil; Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance chief executive Paul Murphy; and Behrouz, live from Manus Island.
  • Join colleagues at the Wollongong Rally for Refugees, hosted by the Refugee Action Collective Illawarra, on Saturday 3 November at Wollongong Town Hall, 1-3pm.
  • Email your MP to tell them to get kids off Nauru — never under-estimate the power of your voice.

The continuing detention of children and their families who have been denied the right to seek asylum as provided under international covenants is unacceptable to our public education community and is a national disgrace. Both Australia’s major parties bear the responsibility for the situation.

The well-documented abuse, medical neglect and trauma destroying the lives of men, women and children who are indefinitely held in offshore processing on Nauru and continued attempts to silence those who protest, such as the Human Rights Commission, our national broadcaster, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), other medical professionals, whistle-blowers and many more, must stop.
