Workplace contacts supported with training

The work of the union is strengthened by members who stand for election in their workplaces with the aim of advancing our policies and strengthening the resolve of members to work toward achieving our goals.

Federation Representatives and Women’s Contacts from across the state participated in a three-day Trade Union Training course in March.

The course, Communicating and Negotiating Skills for Fed Reps and Women’s Contacts, was jam-packed with information. It covered public speaking, assertiveness training, dealing with difficult problems of members and negotiation skills, over the first two days.

Day 3 involved an update on current issues; Change the Rules, Fair Funding Now! and Stop TAFE Cuts campaigns; the union’s 2019 priorities; recruitment; using the media; and the relationship between the school, the Fed Rep/Women’s Contact, the Association and the Organiser.

Participants’ evaluations of the course included:

  • “Thank you for building my confidence in my new role.”
  • “Loved the role play scenarios, learned so much through collegial discussions. Thank you so much!”
  • “Such a valuable course.”
  • “Wow!! I thoroughly enjoyed this course.”
  • “As a country member, being able to network socially was also of great benefit.”

The Communicating and Negotiating Skills for Fed Reps and Women’s Contacts course will run again, Wednesday 5 June – Friday 7 June. Completion of the Fundamentals for Fed Reps and Women’s Contacts course is a prerequisite for acceptance into this TUT course.

Trade Union Training runs a range of courses. Visit www.nswtf.org.au/services/training.html for more details.
