Highly accomplished teachers will be coached on how to help colleagues get the most out of the NSW English K-6 Syllabus at an upcoming Centre for Professional Learning course.
The two-day course, held on 7 May and 30 July with an in-school task in the interim, features multiple sessions on different aspects of theory and practice of teaching to lead implementation of the syllabus.
The course is designed for literacy leaders, assistant principals and instructional leaders wishing to explore current pedagogy in implementation of the English K-6 syllabus to improve student learning outcomes.
It commences by outlining the components of a quality English block and a straightforward approach to enable participants to reflect and support their colleagues’ programming using the syllabus.
The course then expands this understanding with an in depth explanation of current and appropriate best practice in the teaching of responding and composing.
The panel of expert presenters include Jenny Williams, who has extensive English-teaching experience and has supported whole school improvement in Australia and overseas, working with school executive teams and staff to invigorate teaching practice leading to whole school change.
Mary-Ellen Betts has more than 30 years’ experience in K-6 schools as a school leader, classroom teacher and consultant. She has developed expertise in literacy education and co-authored a teacher resource book.
Sandra Rowan was a deputy principal in an inner west school and is an experienced K-6 classroom teacher and school leader. She has been a literacy consultant in western Sydney and a teacher mentor working with beginning teachers to develop best practice.
There will be a task to complete between days one and two that involves trialling of the session materials and leading school-based implementation. Participants will report and reflect on the task on day two of the course.
Completing a Leading Improvement in Literacy Years K-6 course will contribute 12 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 3.1.3, 3.3.3 and 6.3.3 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
