Five-star building

Federation’s head office in Sydney’s Surry Hills has been recognised for its green credentials with a 5-star rating.

Teachers Federation House received the rating through the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS), which provides a measure of a building’s energy efficiency and carbon emissions, compared with similar buildings.

General Secretary John Dixon said Federation House has been a high performing building in terms of environmental performance and energy consumption for more than four years, with a 4.5-star rating by NABERS. “The leap to five stars, pending certification, in 2019 is evidence the introduction of building management’s energy efficiency measures have been successful. We are shifting the building towards the market-leading 6-star NABERS energy rating,” he added. There are 158 solar panels on the roof of Federation House, generating 85 kilowatt hours of energy and saving more than $30,000 in electricity bills per year.
