Units of work to support the teaching of themes present in the film naa muru gurung (to see a path for children) are set to be released by Federation soon.
The documentary, which premiered at Federation’s Aboriginal Members Conference in 2018, champions the many warriors, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Federation members past and present, who campaigned, supported and advocated for Aboriginal education, the rights of children, and inclusion of our First Peoples in the early years of our public education system.
The film, made by Matilda Films and also shown on SBS in 2019, highlights Federation’s social justice lineage, affirming its stance on Aboriginal education down the years through interviews with Indigenous activists who have advocated for Aboriginal education over many decades.
The units of work have been created by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal members and cover a variety of stages and subjects with scope for adaptation for individual school needs while also offering further scope for specific homeland Country perspectives to be taught.
Federation’s Aboriginal Education Coordinator Charline Emzin-Boyd said: “These resources will assist members in their teaching and ensure that the history and culture of First Nations peoples remain a focus in the school curriculum.”
