Fighting the privatisation of education

Federation’s Centre for Professional Learning is jointly presenting an online forum featuring international experts discussing ways to further the fight against the privatisation of education systems.

Having identified the lucrative nature of the education market (valued at approximately USD$4.9 trillion per annum in 2015 and predicted to grow to USD$6.3 trillion by 2020) and in particular how much the limitless, sustainable resource of children, our students, and their education represents, global education corporations/edu-businesses have set about trying to influence and control education in order to satisfy their profit motives.

The Centre for Professional Learning (CPL) along with the University of NSW’s Centre for Ideas and Gonski Institute for Education are presenting the online forum, Fighting the Privatisation of Education, to be livestreamed on Thursday, 23 July, 7.45am to 8.45am.

The event is an example of the CPL’s valuable partnerships with authoritative institutions and organisations to further the goals of public education through quality resources and events for the benefit of teachers and principals.

Guests include US education expert Diane Ravitch whose new book, Slaying Goliath: The Passionate Resistance to Privatization and the Fight to Save America’s Public Schools examines the resistance to the forces trying to privatising America’s public schools.

Host Jane Caro, author of The Stupid Country: How Australia is Dismantling Public Education, will also be joined by Pasi Sahlberg, Finnish educator and deputy director of the Gonski Institute for Education (UNSW) and President of the NSW Teachers Federation Angelo Gavrielatos to discuss how schools in Australia and America are resisting privatisation of education.

Members are encouraged to arrange a Federation meeting on the morning of the event to watch the live broadcast. Members can RSVP by clicking here.
