The Equity Matters Disability Symposium will be hosted in Federation’s auditorium on Saturday, 17 November, from 10am to 1.30 pm, to be followed by delegates’ workshops from 2pm to 4pm.
The symposium is part of a campaign to improve the educational outcomes and schooling experiences of students with disability in NSW public schools.
The symposium will outline the current state of education provision for children and youth with disability in the NSW public education system, present disability research intersecting across equity areas, call on government commitments for high-quality education, and build a coalition in pursuit of equity through collective and coordinated action.
A distinguished group of presenters will speak on the day:
- Catia Malaquias, from Starting with Julius, will addresses Education and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
- Scott Avery, First Peoples Disability Network research and policy director, will speak about Aboriginal and Torres Strait children with disability
- John Frew, a retired secondary and SSP principal, will discuss early childhood implications/intervention for children with disability
- Linda Graham, Professor in the School of Early Childhood and Inclusive Education, QUT Education, will speak about language disorders, challenging behaviour and exclusion
- Shaun Nemorin, from STARTTS, will address wellbeing and educational needs of refugees students
- Peter Norden, Professor Faculty of Arts and Education , Deakin University, will speak about Juvenile Justice and incarceration
A panel of leader activists will include:

- Ted Kenny

- Barry Toole.
