Members have been volunteering to work on Federation stalls at several local LGBTIQ-related celebrations, including Newcastle Pride’s recent Fair Day.
With many LGBTIQ people facing discrimination, disadvantage and bullying in their lives, including in schools and workplaces, events celebrating diversity make LGBTIQ people feel more welcome and connected to their community.
Newcastle Pride’s Fair Day included music, market and community information stalls, food stalls, youth workshops, children’s activities, dog parades, drag shows and more. About 10,000 Novocastrians attended the event, many of whom visited Federation’s stall for information on inclusive and welcoming practice in education settings.
Local Federation Country Organiser John Black said: “Federation’s rainbow lanyards and badge making were a big hit! Hundreds of positive interactions occurred and students were especially happy to talk with their teachers who were volunteering. Parents also sought information on how they can support their children at school.”
“It was an incredible day and we look forward to participating again next year,” John Black said.
Federation will also host stalls at:
- It’s OK on the Macleay: 22 September at Kempsey Riverside Park
- Parramatta Pride Picnic: 10 November at River Foreshore Reserve, Parramatta.

If you would like Federation to be involved in a local event in your town or region, members are encouraged to raise the topic at the local Teachers Association meeting, and move a motion to support the activity.
