Our tireless efforts will save lives

We are celebrating the campaigning efforts of our members, who alongside hundreds of thousands of other union members across the country, have achieved changes to the National Employment Standards that will save lives.

Federation has been a proud and unstinting supporter for the We Won’t Wait campaign that last week led to the Federal Parliament passing a bill that will enshrine 10 days of paid domestic violence leave for all workers.

Many of our members have participated in campaign actions including petitions and protests over the past 10 years.

Teacher entitlements to family and domestic violence leave

Since 2019, NSW public school teachers have been able to access up to 10 days of domestic violence leave each year without being required to exhaust other forms of leave first. The previous provision (since 2012) of five days, was only available to teachers who had exhausted all sick and family and community service leave, leaving those affected by violence without accumulated balances to cover illness, including for their children.

Federation has been campaigning for improvements to domestic violence leave for teachers in schools and TAFE since the introduction of the leave in 2012.

IN September the State Government announced public sector workers will have access to 20 days of paid leave per calendar year from 1 January 2023. Federation will continue to pursue further clarification and provide information to members as soon as it is available.
