Apply for a Federation Tree Levy grant, as the program turns 30!

Applications are open for Federation’s annual Tree Levy, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Since 1996, the grants program has offset the environmental impact of Federation’s paper usage through the planting of trees in school playgrounds, courtyards and gardens across the state.

Schools with an elected Federation Representative can apply for a grant of up to $600 to buy native trees and woody shrubs for planting around school grounds. Planting native trees in schools provides shade for students and teachers, gives native birds and animals a home, and helps beautify the school environment. The trees are also a tangible reminder of the positive influence Federation has in public schools and the wider community.

Federation Life Member Fred Dumbrell first proposed the Tree Levy in 1996. He remembers how local Aboriginal education groups would organise Aboriginal students to plant the native plants and bush tucker with the knowledge of local Elders.

“It’s been so affirming to see so many outstanding applications for funding from so many schools and colleges,” Fred said.

“Many [schools] wrote about it being the best public relations for Federation in their local area.”

Applications are open now. See here for more information on how to apply.
