The NSW Teachers Federation is providing resources for teachers to help reduce homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism in schools.
A Gender, Sexuality and Identity kit will be launched at the forum on the evening of Friday 4 May. This will follow a presentation by Roz Ward, a co-founder of the Safe Schools Coalition Victoria.
The Federation is committed to protecting the industrial, professional and civil rights of its gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and Intersex (GLBTI) members as well as the rights of all GLBTI people.
Homophobia is an increasing issue in our school communities as evidenced by Australian research. Therefore it is imperative that we provide our teachers in our public schools, with tools to help combat the issue. This is why the Federation will be launching a kit that will support teachers in schools and other workplaces to address GLBTI issues.
The Safe Schools Coalition Victoria is an example of a program aimed at tackling homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism within school communities. Schools and individuals can join the coalition to show their commitment to creating safe environments where every student can learn, every teacher can teach and every family can belong.
