All workers should have access to paid family and domestic violence leave

Paid family and domestic violence leave can give a person the time, support and job security they need to escape and recover from an abusive relationship. While one in three employers now offer this leave (including State and Territory Governments) too many employees are still missing out.

Federation supports the very important ‘We won’t wait’ campaign, which calls on the Federal Government to support a minimum 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave for all workers by legislating to include it in the National Employment Standards.

In 2018 Federation welcomed the announcement that NSW public sector employees would be able to access 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave from January 2019 but stated at the time that this provision should be awarded to all employees.

The Federal Government is yet to support this leave. It takes paid leave to leave a violent household but federal laws currently provide just five days of unpaid leave.

All workers must have access to paid family and domestic violence leave.
